Using Meditation to Support Identification of Emotional Cues

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

Have you ever experienced an emotional outburst and not known what emotion caused it? How aware of your emotions are you? What are you feeling right now?

Often people will not acknowledge the emotions that they are experiencing for a variety of reasons. It may be that they are not aware of their emotional cues. It may be that they are not comfortable with these emotions. It may be that they believe the emotion is not important enough to address.

Unfortunately, if we do not acknowledge our emotions, they can have a tendency to accumulate and release in unpredictable ways. It could be that a small frustration with someone could seem not important and you try to ignore it. Continuing to repeat this behaviour without addressing the frustration can lead to an accumulation of frustration. This can lead to irritation and anger. If suppressed without addressing it enough times, it will release itself. However, it may not be toward the original or subsequent cause of the frustration. It could be anyone who you come into contact with. It could be a client. It could be an investor. It could even be yourself. It may even be all of the aforementioned and more.

Self-awareness is key to being able to identify and manage our emotions. In order to become more self-aware there are a variety of different techniques that may support you with this. One technique to support you in developing self-awareness is meditation. It is an ancient technique that has proven to be highly valuable when attuning with yourself. Have you ever tried to meditate?

For many who have not meditated before it can be difficult. When beginning meditating it can be useful to practice with a guide. This is called guided meditation.
