Have you ever had a conversation and not recalled the details shortly after? Have you ever been talking to someone and known what you want to say or ask before they have finished talking? How well do you really know those you interact with frequently?
All too often we walk around on autopilot. This is where we are so used to an activity that we do it without giving it much thought. Have you ever commuted and not remembered your journey? One thing most people do often is communicate. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we are communicating effectively. This is a shame. Communication is such a powerful tool. It has a profound effect on our personal and professional lives. It can enrich our lives, or it can cause damage to our relationships.
When we listen mindfully, we are fully immersed in the process of listening. Our entire focus is on what the other person is saying. We listen without judgement and don’t allow our own perspectives to interfere with the message the other person is communicating. It is not easy and as with any skill requires practice. The benefits of mindful listening are astounding and can include:
Improved personal relationships
Improved professional relationships
A greater understanding of others
Increased self-awareness
Improved focus
Improved attention
Improved emotional intelligence
Increased empathy
Increased perspective-taking
Improved conflict resolution skills
Reduced stress
